What’s Spirituality without Spirit?

You hear it all the time … people say they are not really interested in religion, they are just kinda spiritual. That’s cool. But what’s it mean? No, really?

Spirituality can be a catch all phrase for anything that seems deep or emotional or other-worldly. It can mean anything you want it to mean, and often does. But building your own spirituality is a little like building your own car from scratch. Can you really be sure you get all the pieces together or that in the end it will work? Will it get you where you want to go? Do you want to trust your own efforts when life becomes really challenging or when you are facing the fear of death? You

Sometime spirituality can be a retreat away from responsibility, a chance to look within and forget to keep an eye out for your neighbor or your relationships or the needs of people way across the world. Spirituality can also be a way to focus on what you get out of life, and even though you are focusing on mystical or deep things, big deal. As long as you are focused on what you get out of your spirituality the focus is still … well, you. You know?

Real spirituality is tied to the Spirit. Jesus said, “It is Spirit which gives life.” Both religion and a lot of spirituality share this in common … they are a DIY (Do-it-yourself) thing, when what is really needed is the inspiration from beyond us. We need God’s Spirit poured into us to make us new and joyful.

We need to be filled with the Spirit to have a life that is truly fulfilled.

So go ahead and get rid of religion all you want. That’s fine. Here at Church of the Spirit we’re just not that religious. But we do know that the source for spirituality is the Spirit of God which lifts us up, surrounds us, guides us and comforts us … and in the end, leads us to follow Jesus all the way back to the Father’s embrace.
