Promises at Baptism

Baptismal Covenant = Formula of faith

Think of it as the LCD (remember back in 7th grade math class?) that is, the lowest common denominator. That’s the one thing everything else shares in common. The Baptismal Covenant is like that too. It shows you the most basic set of beliefs and behaviors of those striving to follow Chirst. Throughout the year when we hold Baptisms, and on other special occasions, we ask everyone in the congregation who feel they can honestly answer these questions, to reaffirm their commitment to be a Christ Follower. After all, anyone can call themselves a Christian, whether they are following Jesus or not. Only, Jesus did not ask for us to become pew potatoes, he commanded people to get up and follow him. Sitting in a church doesn’t get you anywhere, following Jesus does.

As you read through this Covenant (the Biblical term for contract) ask yourself how well you are keeping your promises of following Jesus. If you’re having a hard time with any of this, you’re in the right place. Church of the Spirit offers you a safe place to learn how to follow Jesus more nearly (and to love him more dearly and to see him more clearly). Never forget that regardless of how successful you are at keeping your part of the deal, God always keeps his part …
